Eve Arnold, photographer, born 21 April 1912; died 4 January 2012

There has been a lot of coverage of Arnold's work since she died. However it tends to concentrate on the work she did with actors and her range is far more interesting.

In the early 1990's I came across her work as there was a large exhibtion at the Scottish Portrait Gallery and in addition Fotofeis a long gone festival of photography which used to happen in Scotland organised a conference where she spoke in St Andrews. I was very taken with her. A very strong role model. Plus she reminded me of my grandmother - that swept back elegance.

I think unconsciously she wormed her way into me and when I did take up photography a decade later I feel she was a role model.
