Earlier this year I went through to Glasgow for a day trip. I went to the Tchainova Tea House and on the way went to Felix & Oliver a gifty type shop near to the tea house. Inside I saw they were selling gold letters. In a moment of extravagance I splashed out and bought a Y an E and an S. I took them home and out of the packing I lined them up in my hallway and put some candles in jars in front of them and as I was having a dinner party lit them to guide visitors to my living room when they entered the house. I left them there and each time I came into the house I saw this YES in front of me. Now many years before I had read SARK’s book Creative Companion where she suggested that you write little yes signs and place them all over your living space but I never did it.
Recently I was in Glasgow again – a rather abortive trip apart from scoring a great quilt and a bracelet made out of mah-jong pieces but while I was there I went into Woolworths to by some glue as the middle prong of the E had come off and I’d moved my YES while I was waiting to fix it.
Why do I want to fix my YES? Because this year has been different many internal NO’s seem to have melted away and my strength to try new things and not be daunted by them and to keep on trying them seems to have entered a new phase. I think there is a sort of internal NO running inside us a lot of the time. NO don’t’ try that it won’t work for you or a NO I’m not that kind of person or NO things like that never happen to me. So we cut off possibilities before they even have space to form. YES is a more helpful sign to implant.
So make a sign which says YES and plant it somewhere you can see it. The results might be surprising.
